Commemoratio: Sabbato infra Hebdomadam I Adventus

Today is the feast of St. Ambrose, B, C & D, under the 1954 (double) and 1962 (III class) rubrics.

Mass: Proper Mass. White. Gloria. Gradual/Alleluia. Credo (1954 only; for feasts of doctors). Common Preface (1962: optional Preface of Advent). Ite. Commemoration of the Advent feria. Under 1954, commemoration is made of the vigil of the Immaculate Conception (after commemoration of the feria) at Masses said in parish churches and all private Masses; Last Gospel of the vigil. (N.B.: The liturgical observance of the vigil of the Immaculate Conception was suppressed by Pius XII in 1955.)

Under the 1954 rubrics, at private (low) Masses the Mass of the vigil of the Immaculate Conception may be said in place of the feast of St. Ambrose at the choice of the celebrant. Proper Mass. Violet. Omit Gloria. Gradual with neither Alleluia nor Tract. Omit Credo. Common Preface. Benedicamus. Commemoration of St. Ambrose and of the Advent feria.

In cathedrals, monasteries, and other places where conventual Mass is said, under the 1954 rubrics the Mass of St. Ambrose is sung after Terce, without commemoration of either the Advent feria nor the vigil. The Mass of the vigil of the Immaculate Conception is sung after None, with commemoration of the Advent feria and with 3rd prayer Deus qui corda of the Holy Ghost. Under 1962, the only conventual Mass is of St. Ambrose, sung after Terce and with commemoration of the Advent feria.

Office: Ordinary office. White. Matins of 3 nocturns of 9 lessons (1954)/1 nocturn of 3 lessons (1962; II = II & III of occurring Scripture combined, III = short hagiography). Te Deum. Psalms and antiphons of the feria (Lauds = schema I). All else from the common of a confessor bishop. Collect Deus qui populo of a doctor. Commemoration of the Advent feria at Lauds. Under 1954, no commemoration is made of the vigil of the Immaculate Conception in the Office (vigils [with the exception of the vigil of Christmas] are not observed in the Office at all during Advent and Lent). Omit suffrage (1954).

Grant protection to our weakness, O merciful God: that we, who are preparing for the festival of the Immaculate Conception of the Mother of thy only-begotten Son, may by the help of her prayers rise up from our iniquities.

May we receive Your mercy, O Lord, in the midst of Your temple, and thus prepare with due observance for the coming festal season of our redemption.
