S. Marci Evangelistæ ~ Duplex II. classis

Commemoration: Rogation Day

Saturday, 4/25/26:

Today is the feast of St. Mark, Ev, under the 1954 (double of the II class) and 1962 (II class) rubrics. Today is also the day of the Major Rogation and Greater Litanies, permanently affixed to April 25.

Mass: Proper Mass. Station church at St. Peter's. Red. Gloria. Paschal Alleluia. Credo. Preface of the Apostles. Ite. Commemoration of the Rogation Day at all non-conventual Masses of St. Mark.

If a second Mass is said, it is of the Major Rogation, using the Mass formulary found for the Minor Rogation Days in the Missal after the 5th Sunday after Easter. At conventual Mass and in cathedrals, under the 1954 rubrics, this Mass is sung after None, with the Mass of St. Mark sung after Terce (without commemoration of the Rogation Day); no time is specified under the 1962 rubrics other than after Terce, like all conventual Masses (except the vigil of Pentecost) under 1962. The Litany of the Saints is chanted before the altar, with the celebrant in violet cope; under the 1954 rubrics, if the following Mass is solemn, deacon and subdeacon wear folded chasubles, while under 1962 they wear violet dalmatic and tunicle, respectively. Afterwards, the procession is held. Following the procession, the Mass of the Major Rogation is sung in violet vestments. The Gloria and Credo are omitted; the Paschal Alleluia for this Mass is sung. Preface of Easter. Benedicamus (1954)/Ite (1962). Under 1954, 2nd prayer Concede nos of Our Lady; 3rd prayer either Ecclesiae tuae for the Church or Deus omnium for the Pope.

If, however, in parish churches only one Mass is said today and the Litanies are recited publicly, the Mass must be of the Major Rogation (considered a II class votive Mass under the 1962 rubrics). Commemoration is made of St. Mark at this Mass under 1954 whether sung or low, but only if it is low under 1962; the Preface of Easter is used, even though St. Mark is commemorated (cf. Matters Liturgical, 1938, no. 677). Contrary to what I have personally witnessed over the years, it is generally not permissible under the rubrics (either 1954 or 1962) for the Litany of the Saints to be publicly recited before the Mass of St. Mark; if the Litany is to recited publicly, the Mass that follows must be of the Major Rogation unless St. Mark is the patron of the place or titular of the local church, in which case the Mass of St. Mark may follow the Litany and procession only if only one or two priests are available to offer Mass (i.e., it is not possible for a second Mass of the Rogation to be said that day) (cf. Matters Liturgical, 1938, nos. 621-623, 675, 678; RGMR 1962, nos. 346 & 347). (LB236 Twitter/X.)

Commemoration Die IV infra Octavam Patrocinii St Joseph
God, Who in thine unspeakable foreknowledge didst choose thy blessed servant Joseph to be the husband of thine Own most holy Mother; mercifully grant that now that he is in heaven with thee, we who on earth do reverence him for our Defender, may worthily be holpen by the succour of his prayers to thee on our behalf;
Who livest and reignest with God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, world without end.
R. Amen

Continuation + of the Holy Gospel according to Luke
R. Glory be to Thee, O Lord.
Luke 10:1-9
At that time, the Lord appointed seventy-two others, and sent them forth two by two before Him into every town and place where He Himself was about to come. And He said to them, The harvest indeed is great, but the laborers are few. Pray therefore the Lord of the harvest to send forth laborers into His harvest. Go. Behold, I send you forth as lambs in the midst of wolves. Carry neither purse, nor wallet, nor sandals, and greet no one on the way. Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this house!’ And if a son of peace be there, your peace will rest upon him; but if not, it will return to you. And remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they have; for the laborer deserves his wages. Do not go from house to house. And whatever town you enter, and they receive you, eat what is set before you, and cure the sick who are there, and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God is at hand for you.’

Homily by Pope St. Gregory the Great.
17th Homily on the Gospels
Dearly beloved brethren, our Lord and Saviour doth sometimes admonish us by words, and sometimes by works. Yea, His very works do themselves teach us for that which He doth silently His example still moveth us to copy. Behold how He sendeth forth His disciples to preach by two and two since there are two commandments to love, that is, a commandment to love God, and a commandment to love our neighbour and where there are not two, the one, being alone, hath not whereon to do the Lord's commandment. And no man can properly be said to love himself: for love tendeth outward toward our neighbour, if it be the love whereto the Gospel doth oblige us.
