Sanctæ Familiæ Jesu Mariæ Joseph ~ Duplex majus

Commemoratio: Septima die infra Octavam Epiphaniæ

Sun, 1/12/25:

Today is the feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph under the 1954 (double major) and 1962 (II class) rubrics, assigned to the first Sunday after the Epiphany.

Mass: Proper Mass. White. Gloria. Gradual/Alleluia. Credo. Preface of the Epiphany. Under 1954 only, proper Communicantes for the Epiphany in the Canon. Ite. Under 1954, commemoration of the Sunday within the octave of the Epiphany and of the octave of the Epiphany (prayers as on the feast). No commemorations under the 1962 rubrics (Sundays are not commemorated under 1962 when a feast of Our Lord, which today's feast is, occurs.) Under 1954, the Last Gospel is In principio of St. John as usual, as the Gospel of the commemorated Sunday within the octave is the same as the Gospel of today's feast.

Office: Under 1954, festal office. White. Matins of 3 nocturns of 9 lessons (1954: lesson IX = of the feast, rather than of the occurring Sunday as is the usual practice). Te Deum. Proper psalms and antiphons at Matins. At Lauds and the hours, psalms of Sunday (Prime = 53, 118.1, 118.2) with proper antiphons. All else from the proper. Collect of the feast. At Lauds, commemoration of the Sunday within the octave of the Epiphany and of the octave of the Epiphany (proper Benedictus antiphon for January 12). Omit suffrage. At Prime, V = Qui Mariae et Joseph subditus fuisti.

From the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 2:42-52

And when he was twelve years old, they going up into Jerusalem, according to the custom of the feast, And having fulfilled the days, when they returned, the child Jesus remained in Jerusalem; and his parents knew it not. And so on.

Homily of St. Bernard Abbot

Homilia super Missus est, n. 7-8

And he was subject unto them. Who was subject? And to whom? God to man! God, I repeat, to whom the Angels are subject, whom the Principalities and Powers do obey, was subject to Mary; and not only to Mary, but to Joseph also for Mary's sake. Marvel, therefore, both at God and man, and choose that which giveth greater wonder, whether it be the most loving condescension of the Son, or the exceeding great dignity of his Mother. Both amaze us, both are marvellous. That God should obey a woman is lowliness without parallel, that woman should rule over God, an elevation beyond comparison. In praise of virgins it is sung of them alone, that they follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. Of what praise do ye judge that woman to be worthy who is thus placed before the Lamb of God.

Collect
℣. The Lord be with you.
℟. And with thy spirit.
Let us pray.
O Lord Jesus Christ, You Who while subject to Mary and Joseph, hallowed family life with virtues beyond description, grant us by their combined intercession, that, having been taught by the example of the Holy Family, we may attain unto their everlasting companionship.
Who livest and reignest with God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, world without end.
℟. Amen

Let us pray.
Pro Dominica infra Octavam Epiphaniae
O Lord, we beseech You, in Your heavenly goodness, hear Your people who pray to You; that they may perceive what they ought to do, and have the strength to fulfill what they have seen.
Commemoration Septima die infra Octavam Epiphaniae
O God, You Who by the guidance of a star this day revealed Your only-begotten Son to the Gentiles; mercifully grant that we who know You now by faith, may come to behold You in glory.
Through the same Jesus Christ, thy Son, Our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end.
℟. Amen.
