"Father, forgive them"

Stabbed and stoned to death in a "satanic" ritual by three young girls in 2000, Suor Maria Laura Mainetti's cause for beatification as a martyr advances.

Benedict XVI recognized her exemplary death, noting that Sister Maria, "faithful to the total surrender of herself, sacrificed her life, praying for those who were beating her."

Sister's generous response to a call for help from the three girls led to her death. Her last words were of forgiveness for her young attackers.
