Scriptura: Feria Secunda in Rogationibus
Mon, 5/26/24:
Today is the feast of St. Philip Neri, C, under the 1954 (double) and 1962 (III class) rubrics.
Mass: Proper Mass. White. Gloria. Paschal Alleluia. Omit Credo. Preface of Easter. Ite. Commemoration of St. Eleuthereus, P & M, at all Masses (1954)/conventual and low Mass only (1962). Under 1954 only, commemoration is also made of Rogation Monday, with Last Gospel of the Rogation Day.
Under the 1954 rubrics, if the Litany of the Saints is publicly chanted in parish churches, followed by the procession, the Mass of Rogation Monday must be read or sung (on Rogation Monday, low Masses of the Rogation Day are permitted so long as a double of the I or II class does not occur, and if no privileged octave of the 2nd order occurs; cf. Matters Liturgical 1938, no. 623(2)). Violet. Omit Gloria. Paschal Alleluia. Omit Credo. Preface of Easter. Benedicamus. Commemoration of St. Philip Neri and of St. Eleuthereus.
In cathedrals and at conventual Masses under 1954, the Mass of St. Philip Neri is sung after Terce, with commemoration of St. Eleuthereus and without commemoration of Rogation Monday. The Litany, procession, and Mass of Rogation Monday is sung after None as above, omitting the above commemorations and with 2nd prayer Concede nos of Our Lady and 3rd prayer either Ecclesiae tuae for the Church or Deus omnium for the Pope.
Under the 1962 rubrics, if the Litany of the Saints is chanted publicly and followed by the procession, the Mass that follows must be of the Rogation Day, now considered a II-class votive Mass. All as above, omitting all commemorations and with Ite in place of Benedicamus. The prayers at the foot of the altar are omitted under the 1962 rubrics. As soon as the clergy have vested for Mass following the procession, the altar is incensed (if the Mass if sung or solemn); at low Mass, the Introit is recited immediately after the priest puts on his maniple and chasuble.
Because the local ordinary now has the authority under the 1962 rubrics to transfer the three Lesser Rogation Days that traditionally preceded the feast of the Ascension to another time of year more fitting, in his judgment, for his diocese, it is no longer obligatory to commemorate Rogation Monday or any of the other two Rogation Days either at Mass or in the Office under the 1962 rubrics. It is also no longer obligatory under pain of sin for those bound to recite the Office to recite the Litany of the Saints today if not present at the public recitation of the Litany before the procession.
Office: Of St. Philip Neri. Ordinary office. White. Matins of 3 nocturns of 9 lessons (1954; 1st nocturn = Beatus vir with proper responsories, IX = of Rogation Monday)/1 nocturn of 3 lessons (1962; I & II = occurring Scripture from 1 Peter [II = II & III of occurring Scripture combined], III = short hagiography). Te Deum. Psalms of the feria with Paschaltide antiphon. All else from the common of a confessor not a bishop. Proper collect. Commemoration of St. Urban I at Lauds. Under 1954 only, commemoration is also made at Lauds of Rogation Monday (proper Benedictus antiphon and collect). (Source: LB236 on Twitter/X.)

Luke 12:35-40
At that time, Jesus said unto His disciples: Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning. And so on.
Homily by Pope St. Gregory the Great.
13th on the Gospels.
Dearly beloved brethren, the words of the Holy Gospel, which have just been read, lie open before you, and, lest their very plainness should make them seem to some to be hard, we will go through them with such shortness as that neither may they which understand not remain unenlightened, nor they which understand be wearied. The Lord saith Let your loins be girded about. Now, we gird our loins about, when by continency we master the lustful inclination of the flesh. But, forasmuch as it sufficeth not for a man to abstain from evil deeds, if he strive not to join thereto the earnest doing of good works, it is immediately added And your lights burning. Our lights burn when, by good works, we give bright example to our neighbour; concerning which works the Lord saith Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father Which is in heaven. Matth. v. 16.
