“Likewise, either on the altar or near it, there is to be a cross, with the figure of Christ crucified upon it, a cross clearly visible to the assembled congregation. It is desirable that such a cross, which may be carried in the entrance procession, should remain near the altar even outside of liturgical celebrations, to remind the faithful of the saving Passion of the Lord.” 《General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 308》
“A cross at the center of the altar is not a hindrance or distraction. On the contrary, it draws everyone together and into the one Lord, into the one Redeemer, into the one Savior, and so helps us to respond correctly: to adore.”
“Moving the cross to the side to give an unimpeded view of the priest is something I regard as one of the truly absurd phenomena of recent decades.”
(Joseph Ratzinger, The Spirit of the Liturgy, 2000)
Here the priest is to incense the crucifix placed at the center of the altar. Leo seems to be looking for it at the proper moment but without finding it.
Certain parties in Rome at the Vatican, and elsewhere, seem to be pushing the boundaries, liturgically and otherwise, pushing the pope in a certain direction, thinking that, perhaps, by his inaction by the pope will cede them power. The ball is in Leo’s court. Oremus.
