In Exaltatione Sanctæ Crucis ~ Duplex majus

Commemoratio: Dominica XIV Post Pentecosten III. Septembris

Sun, 9/14/25:

Today is the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross under the 1954 (double major) and 1962 (II class; raised to the II class in 1960 following the 1960 suppression of the May 3 feast of the Finding of the True Cross) rubrics. (NB: Note that, under the Divino afflatu [1954] rubrics, feasts of Our Lord of double major rite take precedence over minor Sundays of semi-double rite.) Mass: Proper Mass. Red. Gloria. Gradual/Alleluia. Credo. Preface of the Holy Cross. Ite. Under 1954, commemoration and Last Gospel of the 14th Sunday after Pentecost. No commemorations under 1962 (Sundays are not commemorated on feasts of Our Lord of the II class under the 1962 rubrics, as such a commemoration is considered an "unnecessary duplication.") Under the 1954 rubrics, one Mass of the external solemnity of the Most Holy Name of Mary (formerly assigned to the Sunday within the octave of the Nativity of Our Lady prior to Pius X's reforms) may be celebrated today at a non-conventual Mass. Mass as on the feast. White. Gloria. Gradual/Alleluia. Credo. Preface of Our Lady (et te in Festivitate). Ite. Commemoration and Last Gospel of the feast of the Holy Cross. Commemoration is also made of the 14th Sunday after Pentecost. Office: Under 1954, festal office. Red. Invitatory Christum Regem. Matins of 3 nocturns of 9 lessons (1st nocturn = proper; IX = of the Sunday). Te Deum. Proper psalms and antiphons at Matins. At Lauds and the hours, psalms of Sunday (Prime = 53, 118.1, 118.2) with proper antiphons. All else from the proper. Proper Magnificat antiphon. Proper collect. Commemoration of the 14th Sunday after Pentecost at Lauds. Omit suffrage. (Source: LB236.)

Commemoration Dominica XIV Post Pentecosten III. Septembris
Protect Your Church by Your abiding mercy, we beseech You, O Lord, and since all mortals fall without You, may Your help keep them from danger and guide them to salvation.
Through Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end.
℟. Amen.

From the Holy Gospel according to John
John 12:31-36
At that time, Jesus said unto the multitudes of the Jews: Now is the judgment of this world, now shall the prince of this world be cast out. And so on.

Homily by Pope St. Leo the Great.
8th on the Lord's Passion.
Dearly beloved brethren, when we gaze upon Christ lifted up upon the Cross, the eyes of our mind see more than that which appeared before the wicked, unto whom it was said through Moses: And thy life shall hang in doubt before thee, and thou shalt fear day and night, and shalt have none assurance of thy life. Deut. xxviii 66. They saw in the crucified Lord nothing but the work of their own wickedness, and they feared greatly, Matth. xxvii. 54, not with that faith which giveth earnest of life by justification, but with that whereby the evil conscience is tortured. But our understanding is enlightened by the Spirit of truth, and with pure and open hearts we see the glory of the Cross shining over heaven and earth, and discern by inward glance what the Lord meant when His Passion was nigh at hand, and He said: Now is the judgment of this world, now shall the prince of this world be cast out. And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all things unto Me.

Post Communion
