But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs: but one of the soldiers with a spear opened his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. Note that the Evangelist maketh use of a word of special significance. He saith not: Penetrated his side: nor yet: Wounded: nor any other thing; but rather: Opened: that thereby in a sense the door of life might be thrown open, from whence the Sacraments of the Church have flowed forth, without which there is no entrance into the life which is the only true life. For that blood was shed for the remission of sins; and that water hath brought into being the life-giving flagon, which same is both the laver of Baptism and the cup that giveth refreshment to them that thirst. Clearly it is a good thing to begin and to accomplish, to be acceptable to God and useful to one's neighbour, to please our most high and gracious ruler, Christ Jesus, who saith: Ye are the salt of the earth and the pillars of the heavens. The burden of your affliction, dearly beloved, is as a sleep; then there followeth unspeakable and priceless rest from labour. Therefore, watch thyself carefully, so that while thou followest after neither, wholeheartedly, thou shouldst not lose both the present and the eternal joy. But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs, but one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. Truly this is a great and unheard-of wonder, that from a lifeless body should gush out blood and water! And thereby we are constrained to believe that God willed to set forth the great mystery, namely, the oneness between Christ and the Church. Consider how aforetime a figure of this spiritual union was given us in the Scriptures, where we are told that, from the side of Adam as he slept, one of his ribs was taken, wherefrom was formed Eve, the mother of us all, which same is understood to be a type of the Church. For thereby the Holy Ghost signified that there was to be a true and spiritual Adam, fashioned by the same Paraclete, from whose side, while he slept on the Cross, the Church would be formed, a comely spouse radiant with youth, that is, without spot or wrinkle, or any such thing.

Today is the feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus under the 1954 (double of the I class with privileged octave of the 3rd order) and 1962 (I class) rubrics, assigned to the Friday after the octave of Corpus Christi.

Today, in all churches, public, and semi-public oratories,  by a 1928 decree of Pope Pius XI (Miserentissimus Redemptor) that raised the feast of the Sacred Heart to the I class and granted it an octave, the Act of Reparation to the Sacred Heart (O sweet Jesus, Whose overflowing charity for men, etc.) is to be recited before the Blessed Sacrament exposed after Mass, accompanied by the Litany of the Sacred Heart. (NB: This is not to be confused with the Act of Consecration of the Sacred Heart, which is to be recited on the feast of Christ the King.)

“He that eateth My Flesh and drinketh My Blood,” saith the Lord, “dwelleth in Me, and I in him.” If a man take two pieces of wax and melt them, and pour the one into the other, they necessarily mingle so also, he that receiveth the Body and Blood of the Lord doth become so joined with the Lord that he is to be found in Christ and Christ in him. Another comparison thou wilt find in Matthew. The Lord there saith “The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, [till the whole was leavened,]” xiii. 33,because, as Paul saith, “a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump.” Gal. v. 9. So also doth a little of this Blessing draw the whole man unto Itself, and fill him with Its grace and thus doth Christ dwell in us, and we in Christ.
