In Nativitate S. Joannis Baptistæ ~ Duplex I. classis

Scriptura: Feria quarta infra Hebdomadam IV post Octavam Pentecostes

Nativity of S John the Baptist, Murillo

Tues, 6/24/25:

Today is the feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist under the 1954 (double of the I class w/common octave) and 1962 (I class) rubrics.

Mass: Pro populo. Proper Mass. White. Gloria. Gradual/Alleluia. Credo (1954: for the octave of Corpus Christi; 1962: as on a normal I class feast). Preface of the Nativity (1954)/Common Preface (1962). Celebrant bows his head at mention of St. John (2nd) in the Canon. Ite.

By ancient tradition, the Credo is omitted today (and throughout the octave) under the 1954 rubrics, even though today is of the I class, unless this feast falls on Sunday or St. John the Baptist is the titular of the local church. Under 1962, the Credo is said today as on any other feast of the I class. Also under 1962, the neo-Gallican preface of St. John the Baptist found in some editions of the 1962 Missal may be said where authorized; alternatively, the preface introduced in 2020 may be used.

Office: Proper festal office. White. Matins of 3 nocturns of 9 lessons. Proper psalms and antiphons at Matins. Te Deum. At Lauds and the hours, psalms of Sunday (Prime = 53, 118.1, 118.2) with proper antiphons. All else from the proper. Collect of the feast. No commemorations at Lauds under 1962. Omit suffrage (1954).

Introitus
Isa 49:1; 49:2
De ventre matris meæ vocávit me Dóminus in nómine meo: et pósuit os meum ut gládium acútum: sub teguménto manus suæ protéxit me, et pósuit me quasi sagíttam eléctam.
Ps 91:2
Bonum est confitéri Dómino: et psállere nómini tuo, Altíssime.
℣. Glória Patri …

Collect
℣. The Lord be with you.
℟. And with thy spirit.
Let us pray.
O God, Who made this a day most worthy of our celebration because of blessed John; grant Your people the grace of spiritual joys and direct the minds of all the faithful into the path of eternal salvation.
Through Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end.
℟. Amen.

From the Holy Gospel according to John
John 6:56-59
At that time: Jesus said unto the multitudes of the Jews: “My Flesh is meat indeed, and My Blood is drink indeed.” And so on.

Homily by St. Augustine, Bishop of Hippo.
26/A Tract on John.
“Not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead.” Wherefore did they eat and die Because they believed only that which they saw and that which they saw not, they understood not. Therefore were they your fathers, because ye are like unto them. Doth this death, my brethren, mean that death which is outward and bodily And do not we also die, who eat of that Bread Which cometh down from heaven That death died they, and so shall we also, as far, as I have said, as is meant that death which is outward and bodily.

Communion
Luke 1:76
You, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High; for you shall go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways.

Post Communion
P. The Lord be with you.
S. And with thy spirit.
Let us pray.
May Your Church, O God, rejoice at the birth of blessed John the Baptist, through whom she knew the author of her own rebirth, Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.
Who livest and reignest with God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, world without end.
R. Amen
